A Culture of Clarity

What makes Nabarro different from other law firms you may be considering? We can sum up what sets us apart in just two little words. We’ll tell you what they are in a moment…

Let’s start with an admission. In tangible terms, there isn’t really a great deal to choose between leading law firms. They are all good at what they do. Measurable differences are few; genuine “USPs” are in short supply.

But that doesn’t mean they are all the same. And when you’re trying to improve the odds of making the right choice, there are some important distinctions you need to take into account. One such, we’d suggest, relates to size. Nabarro is big enough to compete at the highest level, and provide you with opportunities to do great work on interesting, high profile projects, yet small enough that you won’t feel like you are just a number.

This more human scale doesn’t just make Nabarro a really friendly and enjoyable place to work; we believe it’s an important part of what our clients like about us. We’re known as an exceptionally personable and user-friendly law firm – good at giving positive and practical advice, based on a higher than average degree of no-nonsense commercial awareness, and a genuinely entrepreneurial spirit.

Which brings us to those two words we mentioned just now: clarity matters. Introduced as part of a major rebranding of the firm back in 2007, that phrase was intended to capture the qualities we’ve just described, in the most distilled form possible. And since then, clarity has come to play a vitally important role in the life of the firm – and not just as a promise to provide clients with clear, commercially focused, gobbledegook-free advice that helps them resolve the most complex issues and challenges they face.

We really do believe that conducting ourselves in an open and transparent way, without any unnecessary complexity, makes Nabarro a better law firm. And, from your point of view, one with a clear-cut difference.

The company we keep

What else makes Nabarro a better place to build a brilliant legal career? Our clients, of course. And we’d like to introduce you very briefly here to a few of the exciting businesses and brands whose interests you could soon be helping to protect and promote…

One of the world’s great technology companies needs no introduction. We helped Google on the acquisition and development of its new c.1m sq ft UK HQ on a site at Argent’s King’s Cross estate. It was hailed in the press as the ‘deal of the century’. We’re continuing to advise the tech giant on real estate including the pre-let of c.190,000 sq ft of office space also at King’s Cross which is rapidly becoming an exciting new business and residential quarter for London.

Land Securities

Land Securities is the UK’s largest Real Estate Investment Trust with a commercial property portfolio worth around £8.67bn. We’ve worked with them for over 50 years across all aspects of their portfolio. Recent examples include advising them on the £656m acquisition of a 30% stake in Bluewater, the £268m sale of its stake in Times Square London to Blackstone, and the £500m development of the ‘Walkie-Talkie’ building at the heart of the City in a joint venture with Canary Wharf Group.

GSK is one of the world’s best known brands, with a reputation for developing innovative pharmaceutical and healthcare products. We’ve advised GSK on a variety of competition cases, including on the only Competition and Markets Authority investigation to date into so-called ‘reverse patent settlements’ which we are now appealing on GSK’s behalf to the Competition Appeal Tribunal.  This case has been widely reported in the press and is being closely followed by the legal community in the UK and across Europe as it raises novel issues about the relationship between competition law and intellectual property rights. We also supported GSK’s expansion into developing healthcare sectors like sports nutrition.

Thames Tideway Tunnel

We work on many of the biggest infrastructure projects across the UK and internationally. We’re advising BMB (a JV between BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty) on the procurement of over 200 supply and subcontracts as a part of the £416m west section construction package for the Thames Tideway Tunnel. London’s new super sewer will tackle the problem of crumbling Victorian infrastructure spilling sewage into the river, helping our capital become a greener and more environmentally sustainable place.

The 2012 Olympic legacy takes many forms. We’re advising Lendlease and their joint venture partners, London & Continental Railways, on the £2bn development of The International Quarter at the Olympic Park in Stratford. This is a huge, 15 year project, involving teams right across the firm, which will create a new business district in London. We’ve already helped secure forward funding worth £615m for two prestige office buildings under construction on the site and helped negotiate two of the largest pre-lets of the year to Transport for London and the Financial Conduct Authority.

Clarity Matters: Bird & Fortune

Since the firm’s re-brand in early 2007, we have developed a number of advertising campaigns and video sketches around the absurdity of exaggerated and over-complicated English and the importance of providing clear concise legal advice that meets business needs.

These video sketches relate specifically to graduate recruitment and get this message across in a tongue in cheek kind of way. Enjoy!
